PRP
In this fast-paced modern world, people are subjected to an increased level of stress and pollution. Also, there are drastic changes in their lifestyle. Unknown to them, these changes are slowly impacting their health. A very visible consequence of this is hair loss. People are losing their hair at the very early stages of their lives. In fact, some of our hair transplant patients fall under the age group of 20-30 years.
Treatment for hair loss is nothing new in the world of cosmetology. But a very popular one that has existed for quite some time now is the Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) treatment. It is a three-step process where a person’s blood is drawn, processed, and then reinjected into the scalp. Apart from treating hair loss, PRP has also been used to treat other ailments such as chronic tendon injuries and sprained knees.
What is PRP?
Plasma is a vital component of our body present in the blood. It contains certain growth factors that help in wound healing and also support cell growth. PRP is produced by isolating and concentrating the platelets in the plasma from the whole blood.
The idea behind PRP is simple – when blood is injected into the damaged tissues, it will stimulate your body to grow new and healthy cells to promote healing. PRP injections are effective in treating male pattern baldness, known as Androgenic Alopecia.
The PRP therapy requires multiple sessions (usually three sessions performed three to four weeks apart). In PRP, we first draw the blood from your arm and add it to a centrifuge. The first spin separates the red blood cells and the second centrifugation concentrates the platelets to about 2.5-8 times from their normal levels. This takes about 20-30 minutes. After the 2 rotations are complete you get platelet-rich plasma at the lower 1/3rd of the tube and, platelet-poor plasma at the upper ⅔ rd. This platelet-rich plasma is drawn into the needle and is injected into the area of the scalp to increase hair growth. This injected PRP stimulates the stem cells in the hair follicle and thus helps in hair regrowth.
Who needs PRP?
Here are a few conditions that can be treated with PRP –
- Hair loss
- Chronic leg ulcers
- Acne scars
- Skin rejuvenation and anti-aging
- Chronic tendon problems
- Pulled hamstring
- Knee sprain
- Achilles tendonitis
- Repair cruciate ligament
- Osteoarthritis
Male or female falling under any age suffering from any of the above conditions should undergo the PRP treatment.
Is PRP Painful?
As the treatment involves an injection, the process can be mildly painful. However, the pain varies based on the area you are getting treated and also your pain tolerance. For some patients with very low tolerance pain levels, we give local anesthesia. This will ensure that you don’t feel even the minutest of pain.
In rare cases, you might experience pain after the treatment gets over. This pain can last for a few days. For such cases, we will prescribe pain relievers to help you manage the pain. But as you take the subsequent injections, your pain level will significantly reduce.
What to expect after PRP?
The downtime and recovery period for the PRP treatment depends on the type of condition you are being treated for. Though most people who undergo PRP for hair loss can go back to their daily routine immediately after the procedure, it is recommended to rest for two to three hours immediately after the treatment.
It will take a few months before you can notice any visible changes (the treated area will start producing more hair than before).
